{"id":3545,"date":"2023-05-25T12:24:16","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T02:54:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theasiangame.net\/?p=3545"},"modified":"2026-09-25T15:12:45","modified_gmt":"2026-09-25T05:42:45","slug":"argentinas-china-jaunt-full-of-intrigue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiangame.net\/ro\/argentinas-china-jaunt-full-of-intrigue\/","title":{"rendered":"Argentina&#8217;s China jaunt full of intrigue"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 id=\"that-australia-will-face-argentina-in-beijing-of-all-places-in-a-re-match-of-their-thrilling-round-of-16-encounter-at-last-year-s-world-cup-is-notable-for-a-number-of-reasons\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">That Australia will face Argentina, in Beijing of all places, in a re-match of their thrilling Round of 16 encounter at last year\u2019s World Cup, is notable for a number of reasons.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It speaks to the growing stature of Australia after their World Cup heroics in Qatar that the Argentine Football Federation sought out the Socceroos as an opponent for their tour of East Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graham Arnold was only too happy to point out that during a recent catch up with Argentina\u2019s coach Lionel Scaloni in Doha, the 45-year-old lauded the Socceroos\u2019 efforts in Qatar, claiming Arnold\u2019s side were the toughest they faced on their way to claiming the coveted World Cup trophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you want a seat at the world football table, these are the things you\u2019ve got to do,\u201d Football Australia CEO, James Johnson, said this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got to host big competitions like the Women\u2019s World Cup. You\u2019ve got to play big opposition like Argentina, you\u2019ve got to play at Wembley. On the women\u2019s side, you\u2019ve got to play the best in the world, you\u2019ve got to play the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you look at all these examples in isolation, you might not see the strategy. There certainly is interest from the federal government. I think there will be government officials at the game in some shape or form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s the competitive advantage that we have against the AFL and the NRL because, like government, we exist locally but also globally &#8211; and through football, we can open up some channels and dialogue for our governments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Socceroos have an Argentina RE-MATCH coming up in June!\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/koamtZGQbHQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what is also notable about Australia\u2019s inclusion in the fixture is who is <em>not <\/em>playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Socceroos face the world champions in Beijing\u2019s glistening new Workers\u2019 Stadium in downtown Beijing, on Xi Jinping\u2019s 70th birthday no less, the home nation is nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, Aleksandar Jankovi\u0107\u2019s side will be busy preparing for their own friendly 24 hours later in Dalian &#8211; against Myanmar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the height of the Chinese boom in the last decade, the idea that Argentina would travel to China and play anyone other than the home nation would\u2019ve been a fanciful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact they are is another illustration of how far Chinese football has faded in the past five years, firstly as a result of the government imposed financial restrictions to curb spending, and secondly by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While there are signs of life in Chinese football this year with the return of the Chinese Super League in all its home and away glory, and free from any crowd restrictions, it\u2019s still a long way from the glory days of the mid-2010s when China dominated the discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The advent of the China Cup, an annual friendly tournament designed to attract some of the best football nations to China, saw nations like Wales, Iceland, Uruguay and Croatia all make the trip east for a series of friendly matches with the promise of bigger and better things to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"China Cup 2017 - Official Trailer\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KBOg-zqccq4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brainchild of the Dalian Wanda Group, who around the same time bought a significant stake in Atletico Madrid as well as becoming FIFA\u2019s first Chinese sponsor, the annual tournament was part of a plan to improve the standard of the national team, by giving them more competitive matches against the world\u2019s best teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;While China has many things to do to make its national team more competitive, the experience of playing in international A matches will be of great help,&#8221; Wanda Group Chairman Wang Jianlin said at at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hope to provide a platform for the Chinese national team to improve through drills against world powers and thus contribute to the game&#8217;s rise in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe China Cup will invite countries from Europe and the Americas whose teams have the highest skill levels, enabling international football stars to play in front of a vast number of Chinese soccer fans on the stage of the China Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A report in the <em>China Daily<\/em> further claimed the tournament: \u201c&#8230;will be developed into an eight-team marquee event in the future, with profit potential in media rights sales, ticketing and merchandising campaigns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet by 2019, at a time when the government was putting the handbrake on football spending, the tournament featured just one top tier nation, Uruguay, with Thailand and Uzbekistan filling out the program; a long way from the tournament promised just years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-x\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Argentinian Embassy in China has confirmed that Messi will lead the team in this recently announced friendly between \ud83c\udde6\ud83c\uddf7 and \ud83c\udde6\ud83c\uddfa in Beijing next month. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xndfumrCCt\">https:\/\/t.co\/xndfumrCCt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Mark Dreyer (@DreyerChina) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DreyerChina\/status\/1660509967382896641?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an alternate reality, it\u2019s not hard to imagine a scenario where Argentina visit Beijing as part of an extravagant China Cup offering that sees some of the world\u2019s biggest nations vie for a slice of the \u2018China Pie\u2019 as it were, with the home nation front and centre of those plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That they\u2019ll instead be readying themselves for a series of lower-profile friendlies against Myanmar and Palestine, ironically in Dalian, is symbolic of how far Chinese football has declined in just a few short years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Mark Dreyer, the author of <em>Sporting Superpower: An Insider&#8217;s View on China&#8217;s Quest to Be the Best<\/em>, says he isn\u2019t reading too much into China\u2019s non-involvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s fairly common these days for international friendlies to be played in third countries, so I wouldn\u2019t read too much into that,\u201d the told <em>The Asian Game<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut Argentina is the big attraction here. I think there would also be some resistance internally for Argentina to play China because, although this is a meaningless friendly in terms of results, a China-Argentina game would still put pressure on China to deliver a solid performance &#8211; and they are miles away from Argentina\u2019s level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe vast majority of Chinese fans want to see Messi and the world champions \u2013 not their own underperforming team &#8211; and they want to see Argentina play attractive football and, hopefully, score a bunch of goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt would be strange if you had Chinese football fans cheering against their own team, and the authorities wouldn\u2019t like that. It also wouldn\u2019t look great for China to be on the end of a cricket score.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/CameronWEF\/status\/1659697336220790785?s=20\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact that Argentina are still making the trip, however, shows the lure of the Chinese market is still as strong post-COVID as it was beforehand, according to Dreyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMake no mistake, this is a money-making scheme for the AFA, with Australia simply along for the ride,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI haven\u2019t yet heard how much money Argentina are being paid to come to China, but they would have had their pick of countries for their World Cup and Messi farewell tour and the compensation will certainly make it worth their while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThings have been a little slow to recover on the international sporting events front in China, and part of that is down to a lack of trust in the market after three years of COVID-Zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis year\u2019s Asian Cup was already relocated from China to Qatar, F1 decided to hold off for another year even though China had reopened, Premier League teams are heading to the US &#8211; not China &#8211; this summer, and NBA preseason games won\u2019t return to China for at least another year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut this game is a good first step. It\u2019s likely to be a sellout at whatever ticket price levels are decided and, short of a drab 0-0, will be a successful event that gives some positive momentum to the sports industry here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThings <em>will<\/em> recover, just not at the speed that China wants.
