{"id":10996,"date":"2026-10-29T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-29T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theasiangame.net\/?p=10996"},"modified":"2026-10-29T12:33:09","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T02:03:09","slug":"new-stadium-ban-threatens-the-growth-of-womens-football-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theasiangame.net\/ro\/new-stadium-ban-threatens-the-growth-of-womens-football-in-iran\/","title":{"rendered":"New stadium ban threatens the growth of women\u2019s football in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"iran-has-rarely-been-far-from-the-headlines-throughout-2026\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iran has rarely been far from the headlines throughout 2026.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 28 February, Operation Epic Fury saw the United States and Israel launch direct strikes on the country, providing the backdrop to an increasingly volatile year across the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At home, the challenges facing Iranian women\u2019s football have only become more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"an-obstacle-to-growth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">An obstacle to growth<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 18 October 2026, the League Organisation of the Iranian Football Federation issued a directive banning men from entering stadiums hosting women\u2019s football matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More significantly for the development and visibility of the game, the directive extends beyond spectators to male journalists, videographers, photographers, coaches and club executives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon issuing the directive, League Organisation secretary Mohammad Reza Keshvari-Fard warned host clubs that any violations would be referred to the federation\u2019s judicial bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: From Dreams to Goals | Iran&amp;apos;s Women&amp;apos;s Football: Progress Behind Restrictions\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/7Eni4FLcic2NKUolsXDP5f?utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on The Asian Game\u2019s <em>From Dreams to Goals<\/em> podcast, Dubai-based Iranian sports journalist Erfan Hoseiny explained why he believes the restrictions could prove damaging to a women\u2019s game that had been building momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think this is a very big hit to Iranian women\u2019s football,\u201d Hoseiny said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m sure those who are Asian football fans have probably seen Bam Khatoon play in the Women\u2019s Champions League or the Iranian national team at the last two Asian Cups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust as it was getting more popular and more people attended the games with their families, it\u2019s a huge hit for them. A lot of the women themselves have been speaking out recently as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoseiny said there appeared to have been no specific incident that prompted the sudden change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing really has happened specifically,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere have been videos going around of men going into stadiums and watching games with their families, whether it\u2019s watching their wives or watching their daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI guess we\u2019re back in that situation where three years ago women couldn\u2019t enter stadiums, and now it\u2019s the opposite. Honestly, I don\u2019t see a difference between those two. I think it\u2019s a similar situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-1.png?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-1.png?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-1.png?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-1.png?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-1.png?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-1.png?resize=2048%2C1366&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-1.png?resize=18%2C12&amp;ssl=1 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The timing has also attracted attention, with the directive arriving immediately before the first Tehran women\u2019s derby between Persepolis and Esteghlal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hoseiny believes that is significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince the Tehran derby is going ahead and it\u2019s probably going to be the most watched women\u2019s game in Iranian football history, I think that\u2019s the main reason,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s something new. Esteghlal and Persepolis, the two Tehran clubs, didn\u2019t have women\u2019s teams until two or three years ago. That was mostly due to the AFC\u2019s rules, where teams wanting to participate in Asian competitions should at least be working towards having women\u2019s teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the timing is very important and very specific because they waited until the exact week that they play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe game even got postponed for a few days because they want to play at a bigger venue, but I don\u2019t see the point when families can\u2019t watch their own daughters, sisters and wives play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-6.png?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11001\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-6.png?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-6.png?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-6.png?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-6.png?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-6.png?resize=2048%2C1366&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IRAN-WOMENS-FOOTBALL-6.png?resize=18%2C12&amp;ssl=1 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond spectators, it is the restriction on male professionals that could prove particularly damaging to the growth and exposure of Iranian women\u2019s football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have fantastic female journalists and photographers in Iran,\u201d Hoseiny said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut it\u2019s important that the interest in the women\u2019s game grows, and that was happening. We had seen male photographers, journalists and even CEOs from clubs attending women\u2019s games, which is not something we would have seen a few years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are a lot of women in that field, but I think it\u2019s important that everyone has an equal opportunity and that interest in the game continues to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMen attending the game is one of the important ways that can happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"a-year-in-the-spotlight\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A year in the spotlight<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new restrictions are not the first major issue Iranian women\u2019s football has confronted this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iran\u2019s women\u2019s national team made international headlines during March\u2019s AFC Women\u2019s Asian Cup in Australia after players refused to sing the Iranian national anthem before their match against South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven players and affiliated staff subsequently applied for asylum in Australia over fears for their safety. Five later withdrew their applications, with human rights activists alleging they had come under pressure following threats against family members in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IR-Iran-v-Philippines-PMPC-2.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11017\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IR-Iran-v-Philippines-PMPC-2-scaled.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IR-Iran-v-Philippines-PMPC-2-scaled.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IR-Iran-v-Philippines-PMPC-2-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IR-Iran-v-Philippines-PMPC-2-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IR-Iran-v-Philippines-PMPC-2-scaled.jpg?resize=2048%2C1365&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.theasiangame.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IR-Iran-v-Philippines-PMPC-2-scaled.jpg?resize=18%2C12&amp;ssl=1 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Hoseiny, the episode brought unprecedented international attention to the players, but that attention also came with consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey say there is no bad publicity,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it was good that the world got to know about these girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt the same time, it made the authorities focus more on these women and make sure something like this is not repeated in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo I think these girls may be a bit more scared to do something similar in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd this doesn\u2019t apply only to these girls.
