From heading into the tournament under pressure for negative tactics and weak performances at the World Cup, the coach now sets his sights towards another home tournament in less than three months with his standing restored, and the possibility of an Asian Cup challenge suddenly looking rather less fanciful.

While results have seemingly changed overnight, the foundations remain the same. Donis has doubled down on defensive stability, but the difference in Jeddah was the willingness to add greater freedom and adventure at the right moments.

It was by no means a miraculous turnaround. Saudi Arabia had continually struggled to create chances in North America over the summer, and some of those attacking frustrations remained evident here. But there was a sense of a team recovering from that once open wound.

Five matches for five clean sheets tells one half of the story. Mohammed Al-Owais, an early replacement for the injured Nawaf Al-Aqidi, was outstanding throughout, none more so than in the semi-final penalty shootout victory over Qatar.

At the other end, finally some green shoots are starting to emerge. There were still periods of sluggishness, a hangover perhaps from the World Cup and the struggles to create anything meaningful there.

The injection of pace from a revitalised Saleh Abu Al-Shamat on the right and the creativeness of Hammam Al-Hammami on the left gave Saudi Arabia a freshness they have recently lacked.

The key to their success, however, was in how they punished their opponents in fleeting but intense periods of play.

Against Oman, they struck twice inside the opening 20 minutes. Against Iraq, they scored twice within a 15-minute period at the start of the second half. In the final, they delivered two goals in three minutes inside the opening 15 minutes. When Saudi Arabia found an opening, they increasingly made it count.

With the weight of national expectation gradually replaced by confidence, each victory appeared to make the next task a lot easier. While the title, to some degree, potentially papers over some of the cracks, there is now genuine sense of optimism around a couple of emerging players who could give Donis something different as the Asian Cup approaches.

A return to form of the Gulf giants

After a decade in which outsiders Bahrain and Oman had claimed three of the previous four titles, this Gulf Cup offered a reminder of the established order.

Whether the reemergence of form was simply a consequence of the timing, with the expanded FIFA window allowing the leading nations to bring stronger, well prepared squads together, or something more significant on the run up to the Asian Cup, the tournament brought the region’s bigger footballing powers back to the forefront, underlining the impact regional tournaments have on the broader Asian football landscape.

For one of those nations, on another day, UAE’s run could have ended with the trophy. Al-Owais may have completed the tournament without conceding, but he owed his goalposts a considerable debt in the final, with the woodwork denying the Emiratis on three separate occasions.

In his first international window since leaving the Croatian national team over the summer, Zlatko Dalic already looks comfortable back in the Emirates, beginning to assemble a side capable of challenging the established order at the Asian Cup.

There was a distinct club feel to this UAE side, helped by a succession of new acquisitions in the form of recently naturalised players. The team regularly fielded ten naturalised outfield players, with captain Khalid Eisa the only regular home-grown Emirati in the starting XI.

The UAE’s naturalisation policy, increasingly a common feature across Asian football but particularly pronounced here, has attracted considerable criticism, including from regional rivals during the tournament. The developing squad profile has meant the identity of the national team has undeniably shifted.

Built on a distinctly European stylistic structure, combined with South American attacking flair, at times, watching the UAE felt closer to watching Shabab Al-Ahli or Al-Jazira in Champions League than it did the national team.

But the quality is undoubtedly there, and Mamadou Coulibaly and Nicolas Gimenez were particularly impressive in midfield. More broadly across the pitch and in depth the UAE have the talent to make the next few months interesting. The debate over where that talent comes from, and what it means for the identity of the national team, is unlikely to disappear with the final whistle.

Qatar have taken a different route, although their story remains familiar. Many of the same faces remain from the team that won the Asian Cup in 2019, but form has ebbed and flowed since then, culminating in this summer’s disastrous World Cup campaign.

Julen Lopetegui’s defensive and counter-attacking approach remains open to question, but there was greater solidity here, alongside brief glimpses of the attacking quality that on their day once made Qatar one of Asia’s more formidable sides over the past decade.

The reliance on Akram Afif remains, however. It takes some courage to remove your best player in an off moment, as Lopetegui did in their semi-final defeat to Saudi Arabia, but there is a reason Afif remains so difficult to replace. The drop-off in quality when Qatar lose their creative focal point remains significant, a factor they continue to lack worthwhile options in reserve.

The luck of the draw

One of the lasting memories of the tournament will likely be the dramatic, bordering on farcical conclusion to Group A.

Oman and Iraq finished level on every measure, including on fair play points after Musab Al-Shaqsy’s caution for an over-exuberant celebration when he believed he had secured Oman’s qualification.

A midnight draw to decide progression by lots was hardly the preferred conclusion, but in the aftermath – following interrupted television broadcasts, conspiracy theories and formal complaints – ultimately settled around Iraq’s failure to progress to the knockout stages.

On paper, four points from three matches, with only one defeat against the hosts, is a respectable return for Iraq, but it disguises the issues at play.

A frustrating goalless draw with Oman immediately raised questions about the efficiency of Iraq’s Asian-based players, as the European-based nationals sat on the bench. Then came the chaotic, if not entertaining victory over Kuwait, in which the optimist could point to the never-say-die mentality and impact in the final third, while the pessimist could reasonably ask how Iraq had put themselves in that position in the first place.

The change of pace against Saudi Arabia was the most concerning, however. With Oman trailing elsewhere and qualification firmly in their hands, Iraq settled into a strangely passive performance. Even as the clock ran down and the significance of the result became clearer, there was little urgency. Oman’s late surge ultimately caught them cold.

The inevitable knee-jerk calls for Graham Arnold’s premature departure followed. Arnold deserves considerable credit for guiding Iraq to a historic World Cup qualification, but he now faces many of the same problems that have confronted his predecessors: erratic swings between intensity and passiveness, questions over the balance between home and foreign-based players, and ongoing uncertainty over the goalkeeping position.

The Gulf Cup hasn’t changed those concerns, as we inch towards another defining moment for the coach at the Asian Cup.

Question marks and emerging hope

For all eight nations taking part in the Gulf Cup, preparation for the Asian Cup was inevitably part of the thinking, few more so than Kuwait, preparing to the returning to the highest level of continental football for the first time since 2015.

With qualification secured, the Gulf Cup offered an opportunity to assess how far Helio Sousa had taken the Kuwaitis. The answer was difficult to establish. There were flashes of individual quality at either end of the pitch, but a cautious approach dominated.

Against stronger opposition, Kuwait looked short of the attacking ambition required to make a significant impact, leaving plenty for Sousa to address before the Asian Cup.

Similar concerns are apparent in Bahrain. Two years ago, they were at the peak of their powers: their highest ranking in more than a decade, qualification for the final round of Asian qualifying for the first time since 2010 and, in early 2025, an unexpected Gulf Cup triumph. Croatian coach Dragan Talajic was central to that progress and appeared to be laying the foundations for something more.

Less than 18 months, and only two competitive victories later, Bahrain’s attempt to retain the Gulf Cup ended with three defeats from three matches in Group B. Talajic departed on mutual terms, leaving the position vacant three months out from a crucial continental reckoner.

For Yemen, however, the mood could hardly be more different. A remarkable 5-2 victory over Bahrain on the final day, following a narrow and controversial defeat to Qatar earlier in the tournament, provided another chapter in one of the region’s most unlikely recent football stories.

Noureddine Ould Ali continues to stretch the boundaries of what appears possible with Yemen. Their progress remains one of the more encouraging stories in a region where the gap between the established powers and everyone else can feel enormous on its day.

That contrast perhaps sums up the role the Gulf Cup holds in the Asian calendar, boasting high attendances, regional derby atmosphere and intense competition; many factors hard pressed to be replicated in the new AFC Nations League model.

Despite its oddities, controversy and occasional chaos, the Gulf Cup continues to progress a cultural identity within the confines of Asian football.

Established powers, emerging challengers, political and sporting narratives at play, this is the sort of suspense and entertainment that makes Asian football increasingly difficult to ignore.

Saudi Arabia found redemption, the Gulf’s traditional powers re-emerged and Yemen offered another glimpse of possibility….

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

45
145,493,512,51
post-10408","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-analysis","tag-gulf-cup","tag-lens-2","tag-national-teams","tag-saudi-arabia
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 -
