The Road to Riyadh just became considerably longer. With the 2027 AFC Asian Cup postponed by almost a year, Mo Fayad and Gabe Tan join Paul Williams to unpack why the decision was made, what the new dates mean and how the delay could reshape the tournament entirely.
The road to Riyadh just became considerably longer.
Less than three months before the AFC Asian Cup was due to kick off in Saudi Arabia, the AFC has officially postponed the tournament by almost a year – moving it from January 2027 to 23 December 2027–21 January 2028.
On this emergency edition of Road to Riyadh, Paul Williams is joined by Mohammed Fayad from Arab News and Gabe Tan from ESPN to unpack a decision that changes the entire landscape around Asia’s biggest tournament.
What ultimately forced the postponement? Why move the tournament back almost 12 months rather than several months? And what do the new dates mean for Saudi Arabia, the AFC and the 24 nations who had been preparing to peak in January?
The discussion also looks at the wider implications for player availability, European clubs, coaching contracts, national team planning and the increasingly complicated road towards 2030 World Cup qualification.
And with another year now added to the journey, could the Asian Cup we eventually see be a very different tournament from the one we were expecting just weeks ago?
Road to Riyadh is The Asian Game’s dedicated series following the stories, teams and issues shaping the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027.
